The ruse

I used to open my eyes as I kissed you.
Come face to face with the ruse.
Picked all the flowers we planted,
stomped on them behind your back.
Wasn't the only one with the trickery.
Moving the ball as one attempted to kick.

Too afraid to leave when I should have.
Hoping you would open your eyes at the same time
see two shameful brown eyes
I'm sorry for the lot of it.
Dragging you through the fallen concrete.

Decades after your passing, a guilty heart sings.
Shards all around. Boxing ring ropes disconnected.
Engagement photos where the flash shined on the negative space.
The pieces that never fit accordingly.
It wasn't love, I don't know what it was.

I used to open my eyes as I kissed you.
Come face to face with the ruse.
Picked all the flowers we planted,
stomped on them behind your back.
Wasn't the only one with the trickery.
Moving the ball as one attempted to kick.

An easily forgettable rhyme.
You didn't last long enough to draw a Winter's breathe.
Didn't last long enough for a seaside jaunt.
Now I live in a meadow beside a new love where I keep my eyes shut to his trysts. Living in another lie, but at least I love him.

I used to open my eyes as I kissed you.
Come face to face with the ruse.
Picked all the flowers we planted,
stomped on them behind your back.
Wasn't the only one with the trickery.
Moving the ball as one attempted to kick.

(bridge) Holding up the mirror to my actions.
No this is my apology, my recognition. I sing to your tombstone.

I used to open my eyes as I kissed you.
Come face to face with the ruse.
Picked all the flowers we planted,
stomped on them behind your back.
Wasn't the only one with the trickery.
Moving the ball as one attempted to kick.

I played my part walking down the aisle.
Raised children, packed peanut free lunches.
Guess I always had that sad look in my eyes.
Writing to you during the war, drew hearts in between our names.
Blew kisses to you over the computer.
The pixelated screen that brought us together and tore us a part.
Didn't know you would return with a knocked up girlfriend.

I used to open my eyes as I kissed you.
Come face to face with the ruse.
Picked all the flowers we planted,
stomped on them behind your back.
Wasn't the only one with the trickery.
Moving the ball as one attempted to kick.
